On sites where regular SNGs take more than twice as long to complete as the turbos, learning how to play turbos optimally is a vital skill to have. I can't stand playing hour and half SNGs! And the hourly rate is better in turbos in that case. But there will be more variance since you don't play as many hands against likely worse opponents.
On another note, even if you have the early game down in turbos, If you have not studied ICM or use SNG-PT, you are not playing turbos optimally. SNG-PT will pay for itself infinite times over. Even in regular SNGs you will encounter late-game situations where the blinds are large relative to the chip stacks and you have less than 10x the big-blind. This is where knowing the ICM math will help you find profitable pushing situations. Basically, learning how to win in turbos will still help you with regular SNGs.
