3/6nl - Flopped trips and raised on the turn

Postby Stelvask » Wed Oct 04, 2006 7:37 pm

3/6 nl on stars. full ring.

Villain has just started playing this game, but he's been getting wrecked. I dont' think it's so much for bad play (he's 14/6, so maybe a bit too tight), as for being in the wrong spot at the wrong time. I wrecked him yesterday i think betting out a draw in an unraised pot, i turned it, which also made his (lesser) hand. THere wasn't a whole lot he could do to get away from it. I think i saw him getting set over setted as well.

Anyways, he's got a few hundred hands at 3/6, and has a huge loss rate, despite never doing anything notable. I just think he's been unlucky the last day, and also think that he might still be steaming.

Anyways, he has $600 and I cover.

I open limp with [Ah][6h] in MP. The table had been very loose passive the last few rounds, and I decided not to disrupt that with a raise (since I like seeing flops). I know a lot of you hate seeing me do this - especially in full ring - but that's not the subject of discussion here.

Anyways, He limps behind me. The button and both blinds play.

$30, 5-way flop. Comes out [Jc][6c][6d]. Checks to me and i bet $24. Villain is my only caller.

$78 turn. HU. [Kh] falls. I bet $55. and he raises to $138. I push (another $423 for him to call)

Thoughts?

This play looks fine, if you had postion there could be an arguement made for slow playing this and trying to ensure that you get his whole stack in on the river, but with a flush draw out there there is a decent chance that you lose your action in a club comes off. Either way I cant really see how you could be behind here, J6, K6 JJ, KK are the only hands that have you beat and the way the hand played out seem very unlikely. I'd guess that villian has KJ or KXc and thinks there is no way you lead out with trips on that board. This feels like a situation where you are only going to get action from another 6 but I really dont see a way to extract more value here.

PS I really like the way you lead out with trips I have been doing this a lot and it really fools people since everyone feels the need to slow play their trips.

Well, he called pretty quickly. Which is what i expected. I had him pegged on either 56/67 with that raise. Like rhound pointed out, most people aren't going to give me credit for the 6 here. I thought there was a chance he had the other A6, but either way i wasn't worried about him having me beat.

To my surprise, he flipped up KJ here. Awful call on his part, since even if i'm going crazy with AA here he's behind. Best case scenario he can really hope for with that call with [Kc]Xc, or a straight + flush draw. there's really not much he can be ahead of once i push.

As far as leading out with trips, I do it for two reasons.

1: I want to build a big pot. Ice (I assume it was Ice who said this, and if I'm giving credit to the wrong person i appologize) said about a year ago "in order to win a big pot, you have to build a big pot". I'm seeing a multi-way flop. Yes, if no one has either a 6 or a J, i'm getting no action. But if someone does, I can maximize my value on the hand by getting money in as fast as possible and committing them to put in chips.

2: I'd lead out with a range of hands here, including the J, the 6, almost any PP, and from time to time a flush draw just to keep people guessing ( I don't bet draws very often in multi-way pots, and even less on paired boards).

By leading out with this range of hands, my goal is to make it impossible for opponents to figure out what I hold here. I could have trips, in which case i'm going no where. I could have the J, in which case I still like the hand. I could have a pair and will be letting it go if I get any action at all. I could have a flush draw in which case i'll be extremly cautious. I could have JJ here hoping someone has a 6 or is willing to bluff me given the board (though I would never limp JJ, so that argument would be more valid on something like an 866 board when i hold 88, or a 688 board when i hold 66.

Either way, I don't expect to win very much here very often. But on the occasional time when my opponent does have a piece of the board, I expect to have him crushed. The rest of the time, I'm able to keep up my LAG looking image.
