Are Flush over Flushes like Set over sets at 6max?

Postby MVPSPORTS » Sun Oct 29, 2006 3:15 pm

I've had 2 or 3 hands like this in the last few days, and was just curious if they're foldable or if it's just one of those very rare occurances (according to ice :D ) at 6max that you shouldn't worry bout...

NL100... 2 limpers... I check [Tc] [5c] ... Absolutely no reads, as it's like my 3rd hand on the site...

Flop [Kc] [Jd] [4c] ... Checks around...
Turn [3c] ... I bet $3, they both call...
River [Th] ... I lead $11, fold... Button pushes for like $65 total...

Now both times I've had this in the last few days, I donkcalled and he had like A4c or in this case AQc... Should I be getting away from these...? Also, how low can the flush be and still be callable (ie... if I had 26c or somethin)...

It's always a tough spot folding a flush, but you just have to ask yourself what they would possibly raise you on the river with that board showing? Q-9 and A-Q would just call, and so would K-10 or J-10. Not even a small flush would raise there unless he was really aggressive.

It's either a bluff or the nuts - usually, unless the guy's crazy-aggressive, it'll be the nuts.

The very first stack I ever lost at no limit ($2 NL) was a flopped baby flush under the nut flush. I'm scarred for life: I *always* think about flush over flush.

In my limited 6-max experience, anybody who is pushing all-in over a bet on the river thinks they have the best hand, or is on a pure bluff. Nobody thinks they have the best hand on a 3-flush board unless they have some kind of flush. So this is definitely a flush over flush situation 90% of the time (the other 10% is bluffs). The only question is, are you on the winning or the losing end?

My rule of thumb in a situation like this (assuming no read that the guy is a major donk): call with the nuts (duh), call with the second nuts, maybe half-and-half call with the third nuts, and almost never call with the 4th nuts and below. Getting good pot odds changes things of course, but this is a big overbet. Plus he played it weak-then-strong which is almost always a monster. I would even fold the [Jc]-high flush here.
