Mute, that was a great post except the bit about running the mile. In my experience luck has very little to do with performance. I can tell you as a former All-American miler, my variance was pretty damn minimal, and was almost entirely self-imposed. That said, remove the stuff about the mile, and insert Golf instead, and you'd be right on the money.
However if you take a group of similarly talented runners (or horses for that matter) and run them in several races, I grant you the results will not even be close to identical for each race. So to that extent I think your point is essentially correct, and very few would attribute the results to "luck".
