MInimum raises for Information Purposes?

Postby depechebkn » Wed Dec 08, 2004 11:51 pm

Hi new poster, longtime lurker on UPF....

it always sees to me that fish are making minimum raises with the nuts. has anyone ever thought about making a minimum raise for info purposes. .50-1 NL if someone bets 4 to me after the flop I will sometimes minimumum raise them with second best holdings to get info. Result will sommeimes be that they will fold which is fine. if they reraise me I know I am in trouble. If they call my min raise then lead out with a big bet I aknow I am toast as well. If they just call they will usually check the turn and I can decide whether to steal the pot or check behind them. THEY USUALLY ASSUME I HAVE A MONSTER. I will sometimes also MIn check raise from the blinds if a small pair hits the flop. They then assume i have a set.

My policy is almost never minimu mraise if I have the nuts. i am looking to make money on those hands since most will not believe you.

Any thought on this strategy.

I like this play in certain situations, I use it a lot in bigger games. I like to appear agressive to smoke out what I'm up against. It works really well with a scary board like a small pair or a 4 straight. If someone bets you raise to double their bet. Often your raise gives the idea that you fell you have the best hand and the player with the big hand will come out of hiding.

I think the min raise sucks when you have an actual hand and there are draws out there. It accomplishes nothing. Now, if you are using a bluff min-raise, then it might have some merits to it. However, consider that your opponent will practically never fold to a minraise and you will most likely have to fire out another bet on the turn to get them to fold. If you have something like medium pair, then at times it might be alright to minraise and then check behind them to see a free river and hopefully a free showdown.

I never min raise either. Actually, the only time I can remember min raising was when the initial bet was so big that I wanted to raise, but not all in, and thought if I min raised it would only leave my opponent with about 1/4 of his stack left if he called, so I was hoping he'd push. I think min raising is bad policy, and I'd imagine that some of the people who fold to min check-raises would fold if you bet into them to begin with.

How much to raise with the nuts. I think this depends more on who you are playin against and your table image than any set philosphy. I am 26 with a shaved head and a big gotee, because of this most people automaticly assume, I'm a loose agressive player and I often try to create that table image. I have been sucessful overbetting the pot with nuts and making it look like a steal.
