TPTK vs a Showdown Muppet (200NL SH)

Postby T-Rod » Fri Jan 12, 2007 6:42 am

Pokerstars 200NL

Villain has 199 and I cover. He's a showdown muppet that overplays hands. I'm just back to the table and several guys are making fun of his picture in chat FWIW.

All folds and I limp with A[d] Q[c] in the SB. I usually raise but didn't this time. He checks.

Flop ($4) Q[s] 9[s] 4[d]. I lead $4, he min raises to 8.

I reraise to $26 and he instacalls.

Turn ($56) 3[h] I ck, he bets $20

What's he have and what's your plan?

If you raised preflop I would advise to somehow put all the stack in. As played his range is any 2 and I don't like playing for a stack here, so I would recommend to call turn and lead about 4/5 of the pot on the river. This way you'll play a reasonably sized pot and will have some room for a fold if he pushes over your river bet.

That is one weak-arsed bet by him on turn if he has a set. It looks more like a flush draw or maybe 2 pair. That said bad players often slow down when they have monsters and make half-arsed 'value' bets.
Have you seen him min-raise before (I always watch and note what a flop min-raise means when I see it at my table)

I think vs a genuine showdown muppet I'm check calling it down on both turn and then river (unless he overbets).

When I don't know where I am and I'm OOP I just like to keep the pot small - I don't mind check calling especially vs a guy who will bluff or will put money in with the 2nd best hand.

Also, for that reason and without a read on what his min raise means, I wouldn't have escalated by re-raising on the flop even though I'm sure the more aggro playas would regard the flop re-raise as 'standrad'.

After the flop min raise here I'm probably shifting into check-call mode and then I can make a good note on him for later.

I too would raise first in from the SB with AQo - probably as 3.5BB raise. Why on earth didn't you?

Poker is silly.

It is not enough to be good at chess, you must also play well.

Somewhere in the world someone is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win.

TPTK vs. a ShowDown Muppet :

you are giving your self excuses to continue with the hand, you dunno where you are atm, and you are facing a lot of resistance. I'm pretty sure you would find a better spot to get your money in against him......Fold.

And Raise preflop next time

LOL--- Why do people think I don't know where I am in this hand. It's like the forum thinks I'm posting, "OMG I limped preflop and now I'm in the mess, what do I do, what do I do."

Not the case.

Background: This guy is a showdown muppet which means he overplays TP type hands and loses lots of showdowns. This guy is also being made fun of in chat. This guy is also tired of my flop raises as are most players at one of my tables.

Flop: He min raises me. Okay, I'm either against a set or a flush draw there. This is a blind war against a guy who's sick of me and the table. So I raise and he instacalls. A set doesn't instacall there and probably takes at least 1 second to consider a reraise or waiting for the turn. A set probably pushes there, especially if he's sick of me, et.al. Yes, yes I know all you BTPrs would flat call with a set and get it in on the turn, but do you know how microscopically few players are good enough to do that?

Turn: He leads 20 into a 56 pot? He's not doing that with a set or a real hand. He's either leading big or CRAI with a great hand there. So now I pretty much know he's on the FD and that flop min raise was a hope for a free turn card. His turn bet is a blocking bet.

I think at BTP a ton of the advice lately is how you play an opponent who is tough and probably like other BTP'rs, etc. There are very few opponents like this online at 1/2. If my opponent was a decent player, would I have taken the 3bet flop line? No. My point is I think our advice as become one dimension versus only a certain type of player (i.e., the player that only calls with winning hands and properly folds all losing hands).

if you reraise the flop.......thats because he's gonna call with Qx or a flush draw and you're gonna pound the turn.

if you're not gonna bet the turn, then don't 3-bet the flop. my preferred line here would be to call flop and fire any non-[s] turn.

Clearly you are much better player that I am.

By the way you posted the hand, it seemed to me what I said before.

I don't wanna play a huge pot against a muppet with out a strong hand and a very good read. So, you had the read and you trust it then you can play it. Not me.

Flop: He doesn't need a set. 2 pair is enough to beat you. any two randoms cards he may have. He is got to have a sort of hand to be calling that 3Bet of yours.

Turn: Is not helping you. and any random weak player might just be trying to keep building the pot with that weak bet. I don't think a Showdown Muppet has ever heard of the term "Blocking Bet" before, so I differ from you read here. I wouldn't think so and franqly wouldn't now where I am at this point of the hand, so I would have folded probably.

If I had the read you do have..... I'm clearly raising his turn bet.
