Ok, in April of 2003, I was playing a pot limit game, up in Alaska. My backer gave me 200, and with the early bird special (Ed note: some places have early bird chip sales, whereupon the first so many players get bonus chips, and must play a certain amount of time, when on this original buy-in), I had $250
I lost a little, and then a live one busted out, and bought $500.
Wanting to be able to match him, I asked Randy for another 300.
Ok, so I had a 500 stack. I was winning a little, about 200, and was considering leaving, when THE hand came up.
This game, like many others in Alaska, was dealer's choice. For those unfamiliar with this, this means that the person on the dealer's button, gets to pic the game. Some places play for a whole round, other's for only one hand.
The pick was Omaha high, and ATE waked up with a nice A A 3 10 double suited.
I was able to make a big raise, and four peopple called The pot was about 600 bucks, with four players, two of whom were all in.
the flop comes 3 5 7, with two of my suit, and one of my other suit. Not great, but at least I have a live draw. The sole remaining player with chips, checked and I could NOT give a free card, so I bet the pot, and was all in. He called, which I didn't like.
The dealer starts to deliver the card, and he turns over his straight. AAAAAAAAHHHH
But, I only had to wait about one second, before the lovely spade hits
I take down the 2000 pot. I build up to about 3000, when another hand hits.
The flop is K 7 5, with two hearts. The preflop raiser, bets all in, there is a call and I jack it up 1100 more, with only kings and sevens. The live one calls, I later found out that he is a BOOKIE, with lots of money.
The pot is now over 4K The turn is a 5, and I'm scared. But, live one is all in, so the worst that can happen, is that he wins, and I am still 1500 ahead, and will quit a winner.
The river is a Q, so at least there is no flush.
ATE wins!!! Yes!! Now, I start taking advantage of the rush, and I start to "kill " the pot
In this game, you can KILL the pot, and make it whatever you want to go!! all you have to do, is post a extra blind IN ANY position, and whatever amoun t you post, it will be doulbe that to open the pot.
ATE goes crazy, and puts out 135, making it 270 to go.
five play, and I flop a king high flush. Made a terrible play here. I bet 100 into a 1200 pot, and there wqas only one with any money left.
This was omaha high, so anything other than the nuts, is suspect.
He calls and checks the turn, and I idiotically check.
I should not have let two pair get a free card. Well anyway I win the pot.
Win win win. I keep killing the pot, pushing the rush
Ended up with something like 8300 in chips in front of me. I stayed, not wanting to be rude. Then, after about 4 hours, someone busted out, and the owner took his place\
He bought in for 10K, which could more than cover me. Up to then, the biggest amount a player had, was 4000. So, the worst that could happen, was that I lose half of my chips, and can still quit a big winner.
I h ad to play very carefully now, and was really not comfortable anymore.
So, I quit 6800 winner
Lesson here: push it, when you are winning, quit when you are uncomfortable
YEAH, I MIGHT have doubled-through against MIKE, but who wanted to take the chance.
My brother worked as a dealer for him, so I really did not think it would be a good idea to even try to bust him.
TO QUOTE MY GOOD FRIEND JAY (the guy with a master's in Theater)
THOSE WHO GET GREEDY, GET NEEDY.
What a day!!
