1/2 Live game hand

Postby pokeritsallskill » Tue Mar 20, 2007 9:03 am

I have 700 to start the hand, villain has close to 1400.

Read on villain: he is raising 4-5 times every orbit, sometimes normal amounts like 10-15, and other times ridiculous amounts, like 50 preflop. Of the hands he's shown down, he's basically been playing big pot poker, trying to put pressure on people with his stack, as most of the other stacks had 300 and less. about half the time he's been called hes had absolutely nothing, and the other half he has had either a marginal hand that beats another marginal hand (example, Flop is J high, villain had J8 and beat JT by rivering an 8), or he's shown the goods.

Onto the hand: Villain is UTG and raises to 15, all fold to me in the cutoff and make the call with [7d] [5s]

Flop headsup: [5d] [5h] [8d]

Bingo! He checks, I bet 25 and he calls.

Turn: [4d]

He bets 100..... what would you do in this spot?

Will reveal more after a few answers.

I agree with BK here, against a player like this you are going to need to take a stand at some point. 75o heads up is not the time to do it. Saying that about half the time he's had it and the other half he hasn't doesn't really help with a post flop read. How aggressive has he been, my gut says he doesn't have a flush, there is a good chance he would have bet a flush draw. I need more information to give a good answer here, other than this is a bad preflop call.

You certainly have to have a read if hes playing this many pots. Does he CB most of the time? If so, hes surely doing it with a flush draw.

I would be shocked if he had a flush, but again, you are the one playing with him and should have a read.

PS...fold that crap preflop.

Hey thanks for the responses.

In terms of his Cbets. When his raises were being called preflop and flops were seen 4-5 handed, he was Cbetting basically any draw as small as a gutshot, or any pair on board. However on a complete whiff he would check and fold. Heads up he would bet large on the flop almost everytime, which makes his check in this circumstance a bit peculiar.

As for the preflop call, it is definitely marginal, however I'll state my reasons for calling.

1) As most people have folded, this hand was most likely going to be heads up with me in position

2) Since he is so aggressive, I felt that my implied odds were large if I were to hit my hand hard enough.

I should also note that I'm not willing to make this preflop call everytime he comes in. However, hopefully you feel that my PF call was justified in this case.

No, I dont think your preflop call was justified at all based on these circumstances. The guy is raising 4-5 times per round. Thats every other hand. You'll have lots of tricky hands to call with. 75 offsuit sucks.

You hit your hand pretty damned hard. You say hes very aggressive so hes probably going to bet a scare card. I hope to god you didnt fold. I doubt seriously that he has a flush. A guy this aggressicve isnt going to raise preflop and then check his flush draw. The problem is that you cant raise when youre this deep either so if another [d] falls and he has the balls to pound away, I hope your balls are bigger than his.

Ok I will try to make different adjustments when I try playing these types of players.

One last thing I'd like to ask before we can end the discussion is...

When players call raises with small pocket pairs, you are looking to win at least 10x the size of the raise is that right? What sort of range are you looking to win off a suited connector, in the 15-20x range? Thanks

Final results, I called the turn bet and folded when he went all in on a [Ad] river.
