How could I have played this better? Maybe check the river and fold to a bet?

Raise preflop, x5BB is my standard.

Bet the size of the pot on the flop and turn, check/call river.

On flop and turn you want to price out any draws, on the river you may induce a bluff from a busted draw by checking.

At no time does the button show any strength here, no way would I be thinking about folding top pair top kicker.

i would bet $2 on the river instead of $1.

if he can beat AK here then he played his hand like a moron. so i wouldnt worry.
im assuming he showed 54? or [5s]?

i dont think preflop raise is necessary OOP against multiple limpers at these stakes.

i'm pretty new to poker

my thoughts:
standard raise preflop is 4xbb +1bb per limper
raise it preflop
flops like yours make money with that hand, but against 3 players its hard.

i'd perhaps raise a bit more on river perhaps 1.40
you want someone with Ax have reason to pay . If you check behind everybody with a low A will check behind. If villain has 2 pairs or better he will bet 100% again, and you end up calling his raise. But if you bet they may very well call you with a beaten hand. if he reraises you can find a fold .
