From reading the Member Journals, it appears that geiststaat, Seb, MTpaid and I are all transitioning to 6-max from full ring games (and in Seb and my cases, from LHE to NL). Are there any pearls of wisdom out there from players that have made this transition recently? Not so recently?

I read several times - is it still good?

I am starting out 4 tabling at the 25s and over about 12 hours last week finished up 6 buy-ins. I find my self winning a bunch of small pots with aggression and using positional advantage. I have been caught a few times shoving with air when I get played back at and I am getting an idea about who I can get to lay down a marginal hand and who will not. I have also been paid on my monsters from those same players. I find that my cards are no longer terribly important, as they are in the showdown FR NL live games that I play.

I am reminded of Xaston calling low limit NL 6-max "whack-a-mole". I have learned that mini-raises at NL25 6-max really does mean monster. Bet sizing is generally lost on my opponents. The site I am playing allows a player to flash one or both cards when folding. I am amazed at the hands that my opponents are showing me that they are laying down when I raise them.

The downside of the site that I am playing, from a new-to-NL-6max perspective, is that it is not PT compatible. If I had to estimate, I am running about 25/19/4. I almost never limp first in, I will raise about 30-35% of my hands from LP, and I CB almost always unless the flop is stupid coordinated, I missed it, and I have more than one opponent.

So. . .6-maxers - does that sound about right? Does the game change much as you move up? Anyone have an opinion on the PT supported sites v. the non-PT supported sites? I am planning on moving up to the 100s after I can manage to play 3 straight sessions of 4 tabling nl25 without timing out (I still time out several times a session).

geiststaat, Seb, MTpaid:

If you guys have anything to add or other basic questions like mine, lets post them. I also intend to post a hand or two each day, but the HH feature at the site I am playing is far worse than Cake even, so I will do what I can.

ED,

Your style of play and general approach to the game seems really good and advanced for somebody just starting out. It sounds like you have a good plan and will have a lot of success. That 2+2 thread is definitely still applicable and worth reading and re-reading to anyone wanting to get into 6max NLHE.

I think the best path for you now is to post and reply to a lot of hands on here so as to refine your skills in all varieties of situations.
Poker is silly.

It is not enough to be good at chess, you must also play well.

Somewhere in the world someone is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win.

I printed that thread and have it next to my computer, and it has worked very very well for me on full tilt over the last couple of weeks (small hand sample, less than 2000 hands). I am still needing to work on my hand reading and post flop play, but I think that thread on 2+2 is the way to go.

How often do you guys raise from the big blind? The article by Tien mentions raises from the blind when everyone limps with 2 playable cards. I have been doing that with some very good success, but I notice my VPIP from the blind is fairly larger than the past, so I was curious about that.

I too need to post hands and start a journal as well...I have my first journal entry written on my notepad, but have not gotten around to starting it on here. Once I get it going and start posting some hands, I am hoping my post flop play will get better as well.

I just found a typical hand example from yesterday that covers what Thxlbx says about raising limpers from the Blinds and what ED says about min-raises which hasn't really been my experience:

I'm SB [As][Kh] with $48 (almost 200BB)
CO fairly new, but seems a little too loose with $38 (150BB about)
CO open-limps, I raise to $1.25, BB folds, CO calls
[Td][3c][Kd] Pot $2.75
I bet $2, CO min-raises to $4, I re-raise to $10.50, CO calls
[Ts] Pot $23.75
I check, he pushes for $26.85, I call
He has [Ks][9s]
