Actually, I think by bet / 3 betting..villain is forced to play for 2 stacks and hero only has to do it when he so chooses.
Theres really not much difference in what villain did and what youre proposing except it took him one more street to do it.
If villain leads, gets raised and then 3 bets, the pot is bloated and hero is the one faced with another large amount of money to call (or raise).
If villain check raises the flop and then makes a large turn bet...its basically the exact same thing execpt theres one more card on the board. Hero has seen villain show enormous strength either way and both partied have put a similar amount of money in either way.
The only difference I see is that with the bet / 3 bet, villain has to make a huge 3 bet to get mostly all in. I think his stack is too deep for this line and it looks rather strange.
