First, my top 20 hands in order in my last 195K hands at 5/6max:
AA, KK, JJ, QQ, AKs,
AKo, A5s, ATs, 99, KQs,
QJs, A6s, AQo, 88, TT,
AQo, QTs, 55, JTs, KTs.
As you can see I love suited cards and JJ, 99 and 55 are my friends. AJs and AJo come shortly after these 20. Anyway, about AK...
I play AK aggro preflop but postflop I don't often get allin with just one pair (unless the pot is reraised, then I happily get it in).
Looking over my biggest lost pots with AK I rarely loose a stack in a non-reraised pot with AK. Almost all of big losses are allin preflop or reraised pots where someone outflopped me. There are a few where I aggressively value bet 3 streets against stations that caught wierd hands on the river and a few where I had top 2 against a set and stuff like that.
Bottom line: It sounds like you need to show more caution postflop. Fold to aggression in spots, play pot control on some turns, check behind some rivers. And yes, AK is probably more of a limit hand. TPTK is not a great NL hand (obv you already know that)
