3 hands against a good player [NL $400 5-max]

Postby Stoneburg » Thu Jan 24, 2008 9:57 pm

Villain is a regular who runs at 22/16 (my stats are pretty much identical). He's a good and winning player. We have like 1.2k hands against eachother and I assume he uses PT. These are all in chronological order and take place within 15 minutes. All hands are NL $400 5-max.

-------------------------------------

#1 (effective stacks $336)

UTG folds, I raise to $15 with KTs. Villain calls OTB and it is HU.

Flop comes 348 rainbow. I bet $25, he calls.

Turn is a K. I check, he bets $60, I call.

River is a 2, I check.

-------------------------------------

#2 (effective stacks $400)

UTG limps, Villain raises to $18 and I call in the BB with 44. UTG folds, so it is HU again.

Flop comes 83T with a club draw, I check, he bets $32 and I call.

Turn is the [Jc], I check and he checks behind.

River is the [Ac] putting four clubs on the table. I bet $80 into the $104 pot (I don't have the [4c] if that matters to you).

-------------------------------------

#3 (effective stacks $400)
UTG folds, I raise to $20 with QQ. Villain calls on the button, it's HU.

Flop comes Q7A with a flush draw. I bet $30, he raises to $80. I think for a while and push.

Hand #2

I think the bad part with my bluff is that it does seem a bit... well, it doesn't make much sense. On the other hand, I just don't think he can call without a high club, and the likelyhood of him having the [Kc] or [Qc] is is not very high, definetely not near 60% which is how often he has to call me for it to be a losing play.

Against this player I don't think I can play small PP's profitably OOP if I only set mine with them, he's too good to be stacked often enough. His bet on the flop means nothing (pfr 16%, CB close to 100%), so unless he started with a PP I am often ahead here. I think most of the time I will just fold, but not all the time (and the ones I fold I'm not going to post here obviously).

Hand #3

I would definetely push with KJs, KTs or JTs there a lot of the time. I reason that my push is likely to look a lot weaker than a real raise, and as Zuccala says, there are a lot of action killers that can come.

Results!

#1
He checked behind with 77. The hand makes total sense on all streets from both players perspective I think, but his bet on the turn is maybe a bit aggressive since I am unlikely to give him credit for a king. He's protecting against overcards of course but I think he will be donating money to higher pairs more often than actually protecting.

#2
He folded.

#3
He called (of course) with AQ.

Hand #1:

I suppose you should check/fold river if he bets since most people aren't bright enough to turn whatever one pair hand they have into a bluff in that spot. I'd also probably just bet the turn since I would do that with all my bluff hands so I have to balance that out or else I have totally wacked out ranges.

Hand #2:

Think you can get away with a little less of a bet. Personally, I think you can bet like $60 like I would with any pair. Of course, I usually have a calling station image so people usually don't try to bluff me so I can get away with smaller bluffs and maybe for others that doesn't parlay too well into their game.

Hand #3:

Yeah, shove is good. Some guys I might just call (as they might pure bluff raise more than they should) since this board is one that can't hit his hand range here too hard. He probably 3bets AA, AK, and there is only one card combo of AQ. So, he can only have A7 and 77 here for legitimate hands as most people don't raise AJ-AT here. But, people like to draw so I'd put more money in on the flop.
