Huge MTT Hand

Postby allstar » Fri Jul 08, 2005 11:50 am

Hey Guys - Huge hand from a MTT I played and actually finished 2nd in (out of 1000) last night. Wanted to get your opinion of my play here....I was actually hoping that my all in bet on the flop would get a hand as good as AK to fold. Failing that, I knew I had 9 clean outs, twice (38%). I DID NOT think that the BB, having just called, would be able to play AT ALL on a board of AK5. Now, luckily for me, as it turns out, the BB also flopped a hand and I tripled up, giving me more than 30% of the chips in play.

Again, my hope was that my (close to, slightly over) pot size bet on the flop would get both hands to fold. I didn't just bet out because I knew, with my hand, I would want to see all 5 cards. Does anyone think this was a fishy play? I didn't catch any heat for it at the table, and did go on to finish 2nd/1000 for a nice payday, but I rarely play MTTs and wanted to get some input as to my play.

Thanks in advance guys...

It's a good play if the players are disciplined enough to fold a hand like AK there. I would have let AK go if I was your opponent. There's no way I'm messing with a big stack on the final table in a hand like that.

The problem...the people on these online tourneys aren't like me or TJ Cloutier. Though themove you made in theory sounds great...but these players will call you with AK or worse because they don't understand how to play MTTs. "surivival" isn't as important to them...as is "getting it allin" :)

I probably just would have folded preflop. that raise cost 10 percent of your stack. Let these guys knock each other out..and then open up when it gets down to 3 or 4 people.

With AK and Choco's stack I would have bet the pot not just doubled the blinds and taken it down right then. So that was his mistake.

Hawk Girl had no business in the hand to begin with and ended up with the 3rd best hand.

You playing the hand for only 8k more is a good play. It was costing you 8K to win 44,400 with a perfect flop. I am not crazy about your all in on a draw. But if you hadn't pushed all in then you would have had to called an all in. So if your going to chase the flush you might as well be the first to push. Now that we know what everyone had you had the best chance to improve.

Good job on the high finish.

Thanks for the replies Kenny and Cowboy...I agree that my all in was dubious..I was hoping my fold equity combined with the FD made it a +EV play
