Trisomic 21 population alive and well at PLO8 tables

Postby piersmajestyk » Fri Sep 09, 2005 3:53 pm

I am no expert at PLO8 but I am certainly no bonehead either which can not be said for a major portion of the low limit PLO8 gang on Party. There is no concept of the fact that you can sometimes make money by folding the nuts instead of calling. An by god if they have A2 in their hand they are calling all raises with nothing but their naked A2 low draws. If you are just wanting to play poker for some recreation and pick up some extra dollars Bonus Whoring or what not then I highly recommend this game because if you learn how to play reasonably well you will be leaps and bounds ahead of these folks. I just can't see any way a person can lose over any amount of time playing this game against this opposition.

Some hands for your viewing pleasure

Hand 1 - hilarious

Hand 2 - I call down if i am opponent, too... unless i have a read on you as a good, winning player (which, well, i do). i can't tell you how many times i have seen someone jam on a board like this with nothing more than a nut flush draw and no low or a weak low (e.g., A8) or even just an A2 that they still think is good if another low card hits on the turn.

At this level, i definitely feel like it's -EV for me to fold every time this happens and i don't have a redraw, but maybe i should reconsider that. anyone else have thoughts on this? when do you lay down at $25 plo8 if you're the opponent? what about $100 plo8? is it read dependent? if so, what's the read variable? idiot or not?

Hand 3 - The "I am thinking of a card" is classic... and you got it! what was that bonehead thinking?

Hand 4 - Great redraw. To bo be fair, he had a good redraw to the K-high flush, too. Honestly, Piers, would you lay this down if you were the opponent?

I've looked over my PTO wheel hands, and this is the best I can come up with for a fold-a-flopped-wheel strategy on $25 PLO8 at Party against non-winning players.

Fold to a reraise to a pot raise with 3 wheel cards on the board/flop when you've got the wheel and no one-card redraws (e.g., flush or higher str8... runner-runner draws don't count). if it's a pot-sized reraise to a min-raise, i might consider peeling one off to see if I can get a flush draw.

this situation is actually quite rare for me, though. i'll redraw to ANY flush due to the fact that most of my opponents will jam a naked nut low.

keep in mind that i might need to reconsider this against good players (i usually dump it) and/or at higher limits, but right now, this is what i've got. any commentary is welcome.

if you qualify all of these hands with "against a solid player", then folding these hands is easy. that being said, there are maybe only 10-15 players i have seen on Party to whom i would give this much respect... and several of them populate this board.

maybe i give my opponents too little credit. the problem is that i only have to have a 2:1 quartered-scoop ratio to make this a neutral call. i think i beat those odds if you limit the opponents to non-winning players.

hmmm, just writing this is making me think that i should stop making this play despite the idiocy i see at Party -- it's high-variance with only a small +EV (if that).

thanks for your comments, piers.

Hand 1 I think you played OK, I'd have raised the full pot on the turn though, if he has somethnig going low and an ace he'll pay for it at this level I'd have thought. As time goes on I'm having better and better results by playing a really aggressive game whenever I have a hand and bet less than full pot very rarely in these sort of situations. It's amazing how many cheap pots you'll win from players who have a reasonable hand but who can't stand the heat. I suppose in this case with your low draw you do really want a call, but his small lead into the pot suggests he's going to play anyhow.

Hand 2 plays itself pretty much, nice situation to be in though  classic PLO8 situation where, if online play had deeper stacks, you could absolutely break some of these guys.

Hand 3 I really like pumping this on the flop, I don't like giving cheap cards here particularly. As you say, A2's are unlikely to fold, and you want to get anybody with two pair or whatever to put in the maximum on the flop lest you hit your flush and don't get any more cash out of them. I reckon thats a nice raise when it comes back to you, though, this hand is a bona fide monster.

Hand 4 is a felt flop if ever I saw one, at PLO8 $25. Nicely done. Great turn too!

Thanks for the feed back guys. I really am enjoying these games as they suit my online style of play which is generally pretty tight and it is a nice change of pace from holdem. I was mainly playing to clear the multitude of bonuses that have been offered this month but I may indeed step up a notch or two and see how well things go. I will definately agree with you about the variance factor compared with PLO. I also just don't like straight hi for Omaha. I played a shitload of limit Omaha Hi in southern Lousiana as that was the game of choice more often than holdem back in the mid 90's and for me there was just too much luck involved in the game. I know with the pot limit that some of this is lessoned but I still have that negative fell about the game from those early years.
