Would anyone else fold this hand?

Postby ronm23 » Tue Jan 11, 2005 11:14 am

I'm in AC this weekend getting my ass handed to me in 10/20 limit and i'm down to the last one hundred dollars that i brought. I never play no-limit but a friend of mine was in the 1/2 no-limit game and talks me into sitting at his table with my last one hundred dollars and a hundred more he loaned me. Anyways, I get on a run of good cards and build my stack to about $800. Here's the hand at question. I'm in middle position and catch KsKc. I raise to $10 everyone folds to the SB who reraises to $20, i reraise $40 more and he calls. I have a tight image at the table and the player in the SB is a good agressive player and is well aware of this. Up to this point, I've won every hand that I've had to showdown. The flop comes up Js 7s 2c and the SB goes all-in for $300. At this point I think that he most likely has pocket aces and i didn't want to risk a big portion of my chips if i was right. I debated for a while and finally folded my hand face up and he shows me his queens and i'm left dreaming of the pot that could've been mine. Would anyone else have folded kings in this situation?

I am not the most experienced NL player, but every time I raise with kings and get reraised, I would try to get as much money in as possible. If I've got more than 50% of his or my stack in the middle preflop, I'll probably bet the rest on the flop regardless because you can outguess yourself too easily.

Someone with more experience has probably got better feedback for you.

Its very doubtful he would go all in for $300 into a $160 pot with AA or JJ. So no I probably wouldnt fold.

He is very ballsy or very crappy. If I was holding Q's I would have had to put you on AA or KK. If I put you on AA I don't believe your going to fold your hand to my all in. So the only chance he has is to sell AA or a set and that will only work if you don't have AA.

As Ice said the mistake he made was overplaying a set or AA. If he had made a pot size raise I would have thought long and hard about laying my Kings down. If you had more expierence in NL you would have picked up on it. Hope you went on winning you still had a nice roll going.

What about you Ice? Is there anything the other player could have done to get you to muck your Kings? Reason I am asking is because sometimes I give players to much credit for having a hand. Saving me money sometimes and costing me money others.

When you have position on a re-raiser like that I like to just call it. Re-raising identifies your hand as either A-A or K-K, so I'd rather my opponent be much less sure of my holdings when we take a flop. Since you decided to re-raise, why was it such a small amount, $20? Making it $60 or $80 to go is much stronger. If Your opponent has A-A he's for sure coming over the top once he sees how much you like your hand, if he just calls then you have an easy call on the flop when he shoves in. If he folds, well, like I said, raising a second time preflop generally makes someone put you on K-K or A-A.

It is tough to make that fold on the flop, but I probably would have been scared into it myself. Why the heck did you SHOW that fold though?! I wouldn't want people to know that I'm capable of that laydown. Iceman makes a good point though, most people wouldn't overbet the pot there if they are figuring to be really far ahead, so it was probably a bad fold unless you had seen your opponent make tricky moves like overbetting a strong hand earlier in the night.

Unless the player is making some kind of crazy advanced play, his big bet is actually a show of weakness, not strength, It takes some NL experience to understand whats happening in these kind of plays. But I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it. You took your $200 and made it to $800...and you folded one winning hand when you didn't have all that much invested. It happens to all of us from time to time. :)

Thanks for everyone's responses so far. In hindsight, there are many things i probably could've done differently, calling the all-in would be at the top of the list, reraising a larger amount would be another. By the way my reraise was $40 more, which was about the size of the pot, not $20.

As for why i showed the fold, i don't know why, it was a spur of the moment thing. I guess i was hoping that he would show if i showed and he did unfortunately. The funny thing is, minutes before this hand took place my friend and i were at dinner talking about showing your hand when you fold. He often shows his hand when he folds and i told him that he should never do that and i turn around and do the same thing, go figure.

To be quite honest, the fold was more out of fear rather than any logical thinking at the time. My weekend was going so badly that i wanted to keep the little bit that i made back and not take any unnecessary risks. Luckily a drunken idiot sat down at the table shortly after that and paid me off nicely and i was able to make back almost all of my losses for the weekend.

I agree with Ice here, mad. Only a select few could do an advanced play like that to try and trap AA and KK.

Altthough..wouldn't just leading a decent sized bet into the raiser work better then moving all-in?
