Overpair vs a Short Stack

Postby briachek » Wed Jan 19, 2005 11:02 pm

Haven't played NL online in a while and decided to try it again to mix it up with PLO

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $0.5 BB (10 handed)

MP3 ($48.3)
Hero ($55.15)
Button ($24.65)
SB ($25.75)
BB ($22.4)
UTG ($10.75)
UTG+1 ($22.15)
UTG+2 ($25)
MP1 ($16.75)
MP2 ($5.5)

Preflop: Hero is CO with [8h], [8s].
UTG folds, UTG+1 folds, UTG+2 folds, MP1 folds, MP2 calls $0.50, MP3 folds, Hero calls $0.50, Button calls $0.50, SB completes, BB checks.

Flop: ($2.50) [7c], [5c], [4d] (5 players)
SB checks, BB checks, MP2 bets $0.5, Hero raises to $3, Button folds, SB folds, BB folds, MP2 raises to $5 (All-In), Hero calls $2.

Turn: ($12.50) [7s] (2 players, 1 all-in)

River: ($12.50) [Td] (2 players, 1 all-in)

Final Pot: $12.50

How was this type of play against the short stack. I usually look for this since short stacks don't usually need someone good to go all in so I thought my overpair may be good and I didn't want anyone chasing for the straight. Any comments?

Looks like a fine way to play it to me.

Okay, once again, I seemed to have not included the results when i meant to. He had 86 for the flopped straight. I seemed to be haunted by 86 that night.

Quick omaha insert- you have the 88 for "blockers" of the straight so it's statistically highly unlikely anyone has a straight here. Against anything else you pretty much have odds to call the last $2 (you have 6 outs against a set or overpair for instance) and I don't see how you can specifically put the short stack on a hand that has you beat from his initial weak lead, so raising is fine too. In summary, I can't see a single error you made here.

should i be looking for these situations? Trying to put the short stack all in to isolate when I have a decent, but vunerable hand? It would seem a lot of money can be made by trying to get the short stack to push all his money in with a weak hand because he "feels" desperate because he only bought in with $5.
