I'm finding this common in NL ring - Anyone have any insight

Postby WildBillHickok » Sat Jan 22, 2005 8:32 am

This has occurred 3 times now in my first 3 hours of NL ring....50/1.00 (and on turn or flop someone going all in over the top of me and BIG, out of proportion to size of the pot )
say 3 limpers, i get AJs on button, so raise it to $4...BB calls, 2 limpers call...flop comes
AJ7 rainbow...check, MP bets $5, i raise it to $16 to go, fold, fold, MP calls...
turn comes a 2, suits don't matter...MP checks, i bet say $16 again, fearing his smooth call and a set, but thinking maybe he's on a strt draw, MP waits 2 secs, then raises to $110 to go, (i have $110, he still has $60 left) ...what do you do? Course first thing i think of is set of 7's...but why'd he take a shot on the flop? Does he have A7? AK? I don't think set of A's. Maybe he WAS on the draw and it went bad and so he wants to steal the pot and he's thinking i have just a weak A and will lay it down because of my not so strong betting.... I'd just joined the game and didn't have any read on him, nor him on me. I folded here...(not liking calling an all in, rather than being the first to all in...tournament habit)
2nd time, i had 88 on CO seat...raised it to $3...limpers and BB came on in...4 of us...
flop came 567 rainbow...checked to me, i bet $12...everyone folds except guy to my right...he has about $200 and i have about $106 left, he makes it $80 to go...i'm thinking bigger PP, possibly 89? maybe set of 7's? If i call, i know he'll put me all in i figure, ...maybe he's got A7...i've got a opened ended draw and top pair...we HAD been playing awhile, i MAY have seemed tight to him, but my % flops seen was 31%, maybe he thinks i'm too tight and will lay it down...why the big bet? wants to take it down without a fight right there? Maybe HE'S got A4, on the draw and doesn't want ME drawing...isn't it funny how many thoughts can go thru your head in just 5-10 seconds...i probably made a dumb move, but went all in, hoping to scare him away if he was on the draw(tho he was pot committed and it wouldn't be that much more to call for him) , i DID have top pair w/a draw, he most likely didn't have AA or KK or QQ nor 2 pair, were my last thoughts (also perhaps had in mind that first hand above and wanted too much to see what was going on and thinking the loser's lament "it's only money") ...he quickly called...
What do you think of my call,,,dumb huh? i'll tell you what happened...

Hand #1 I would call. I'd put the guy on lower two pair, AK, or AQ. Sure the possibilty of a set is there, but that's what you have a bankroll for. Most people will slow play their sets. And if they do raise..they don't normally checkraise all-in!! If he has a set..great..pay him off here...but I think you are winning 90% of the time.

Hand#2 I would fold. Reason being I've been in hands like this many times. Everytime I call with a pocket pair openended like you did....I'm usually up against a set, two pair, or bottom straight. That has been my expereience in this situation.

like your analysis of first hand...perhaps i need to shed some NL tournament habits, i.e.
surviving... and good advice on the bankroll requirements, yep that's what they're there for.

2nd hand, i didn't think he had the strt made, think he'd slowplayed it for one more card anyway...on the turn an 8 hit...i was feeling pretty good here, having the top set...

K hit the river and isn't always a good feeling to see them muck their hand...never did know what he had, it was a BIG nice pot. :)

You need to get the hand history and see what that guy in hand #2 had!!! I'm curious.

I would imagine he had something like 76 or 55 so he tried to protect it on the flop.

sorry KennyG, i'm new to PS and wasn't aware of how to get histories, nor do i know how to go back and get one...i'm used to UB, where you can immediately get a history...say la veee...i was REAL curious too what he had on the 2nd, but figured his money would spend just as well if i didn't know. heh
