Extraction - How much to bet? (Hand Quiz)

Postby MTPaid » Mon Nov 21, 2005 3:22 pm

Near the end of the 1st hour of a $5 rebuy tournament. In the previous 2 hands I had tripled up with AK when flopping 2 pair and stolen the blinds with pocket 10's but didn't show. Now the 3rd hand in a row I have something preflop w/ no information on my opponent as he had recently been moved to the table.

being in the big blind, he could have anything so you can't put him on a hand yet really. I bet 500 and if he pushes, instacall. If he happens to have a flush draw, he's paying and might push. If he has another queen, he may call or push. If he has the 3 or a pocket pair, he may actually push thinking you are just putting in a continuation bet. I don't slowplay so I'm betting.

OK, limping in from UTG+1 he could have any pocket pair smaller than JJ. If he had JJ or better he definitely raises coming in. If he has 33 I'm paying him off like you said. He could also have KQ suited or offsuit, QJ suited, or even QT suited. If he is a little looser he can have the last 2 hands offsuit as well.

I almost always bet out trips for the reasons you just pointed out as well as the fact that if he has a Q as well he has to pay to catch his kicker and fill up on me. He could also have a flush draw.

I bet $300 into a $750 pot and he calls.

Pot is now $1350 and the turn card is [3d].

Good card for me because although now I split if he has a Q, I can't really lose this hand to a flush. In fact now I want him to catch his flush and I really gain nothing from betting here so after he checks the turn, I check behind.

River is [Td].

Pot is still $1350 and he checks. How much now? He has $1980 left.

first, i think you bet too little on the flop (i like 500 better)... but that's water under the bridge.

the reason i mention it is this very situation. i would bet half pot here, and this pot is a little thin. anyway, i think a lot of people will call a t700 bet with a pocket pair. you'll be CRed all-in if villain holds a 3, Q, or 33.

it's also likely that you won't get called at all. you attempted to induce the river bluff by checking behind, and he didn't bite. that probably meant that he was chasing the flush (which whiffed) or had 33. i have to think that a Q would make some attempt at a value bet here.

i get this feeling that you're going to say he CRed and turned over 33.

i still bet the turn as i don't think a flush draw is paying off much here, if he hits and you betting again may be less suspicious than if you check behind. Also, if you get him to get a little more in on the turn, he might bluff the river all in because the pot is now big enough.

The way you played it. I bet about half pot on river but don't expect to be paid off. You are either splitting or he's folding but you obviously aren't checking behind or folding at all. he could have QT though.

I pretty much thought we were splitting the pot until he checked the river. At that point, I had to put him on a low to medium pocket pair and I figured the only way to make him pay me (if it wasn't 33) was to make a bet that looked weak on the river. I bet $500 and he called. He turned over pocket 5's.
