A losing month

Postby Cactus Jack » Sun Jan 01, 2006 10:10 am

and starting out no better.

No need to reply. Just had to get it out of my system. Dec was my first losing month, ever. I've been running so bad it's just not to be believed. Almost impossible to lose as many times as I've lost on the most ridiculous hands. One bad beat after another. I've been way out front in some SNGs and bad beats put me out, one after another. For every 2 mistakes I've made, I've had 20 bad beats go against me. I've won 1 SNG in the past two weeks. That's like not even possible to do, even playing horribly, which I have not been.

I've played 3 this morning and the results are exactly the same. If there is a way for them to suck out on me, they are finding it. Terrible decisions, yet being paid off. I'm down to less that $200 in my online accounts, and that's no joke. You just can't figure it out.

I've never believed that someone can "run bad." Now, I do. With even average luck, I win more than my share. But, this...it's just really, really discouraging. I'm sitting here shocked. It just can't be happening, yet it has.

It's so bad I'm at a loss as to what to do. Quit for awhile? Keep playing and wait it out? Hang myself? (Boy, that feels like it would be the right thing to do, but awfully permanent.) I love the game, but this tough to go through.

Sorry, guys, but it sure is possible to run bad. And really hard to keep going.

Man, I whine when I finish UP a session at cash games. So I got nothing to say except KEEP THE FAITH and keep plugging.

Oh, and my usual advice:

switch limits,
switch sites,
and chase bonuses.

Good luck!!!

Someday I'll look back and think it was a good experience, but for now, hell NO. :)

Seriously, I really do understand how Helmuth felt when he cried, "if it weren't for luck, I'd win every time." Or how The Mouth felt when he said in his buddy's ear, "I play great and still lose." When your luck is running so bad that you start to expect that three outer to hit ya on the river, then it really is hard to play your best.

When you know, KNOW, that with just average luck you're as good as anyone at the table, you cringe when you get hit with another really bad beat. Not the kind where the guy had a good reason and a reasonable chance of winning, but like this one, yesterday...

SNG. I had something like TT in the big blind. Guy UTG mini-raised, folded to me and I called the 2:1. Flop was all unders and I pushed and he called. He had AJs. With no pair and one spade on the board! He hit runner-runner for the flush. There was no way in hell he should have called that and it sucks he was rewarded for that horrendous move.

Or, I get QQ in the BB, push and get called by KQo, and he hits not one but two Ks.

That's been the way this month has been. Checking with PT, my last 20 pocket pairs have improved to a set 1 time.

While writing this, I just had KK in the CO. Big stack (moron) pushed me all in with TT. He hit his set.

Dunno what more I can do.

Yes these things suck but just play through them. I think people forget that while these hands are dominating, you still will lose the hands you posted about 1:4 -1:5 times. That's still quite a bit, its just that since you're a sng player instead of buying back in you're done after the beat, one of my caveats about tournaments in general.

I whine and feel bad when I end a session up sometimes. Last session I ended up $15, today up $7... my BB/100 over the last 2k hands is like 2.0, so I think you have the right to whine a bit.

The best cure in my opinion is to just not play for a while. The worse you run, the bigger the psychological effect of losing is. It's also mentally easy to imagine that while you're away from the table you don't have to suffer the bad beats that you would have if you had played, if you know what I mean. Take a week off and recharge your batteries, then start out playing something different, like a lower limit or try another game for a while. I promise you you will feel a lot fresher. Remember that even though you don't think you are playing worse you just can't sustain your A-game while you're running bad, nobody can, so make a +EV move and take soem time off. :)
