Do you ever make dumb plays?

Postby Mad Genius » Mon Jan 31, 2005 12:57 am

I ask this because in the past couple of days I have made two incredibly dumb bluffs and lost huge pots. In the first hand I tried to bluff a guy on a AAT96 board where I knew he had a big ace but was trying to represent a turned flush the whole way. Against an overly solid player it would have worked with my tight table image and all but clearly most people can't lay down big hands in big pots even when the opponent is representing something better. Today I tried to bluff a guy out of a J8875 board where he held QQ. I played it exactly like a flopped set but regardless he called it down and I lost $400 on the hand. In both hands I did have plenty of outs on the flop/turn before an unimproved river so it's not like I was stone-cold bluffing every street.

I know bluffing is usually hopeless, when most online players don't know how to fold. So why do I do it? I don't know. I just like to mix up my plays and expect my opponents to play and think at a higher level than they do in reality. I know it's dumb of me to do that. I've limited my dumb plays but they still happen sometimes. Am I the only one that makes these dumb plays on occasion? I am kicking myself for being a dumbass but I know everyone makes mistakes so I guess I shouldn't feel too bad.

Yes, I make dumb plays all of the time, unfortunately. Last night in my regular Saturday night MTT I was short stacked on the bubble. Sixth place out of 6 and paying five. I knew I needed to do something soon as I was down to 6X BB. In the BB I had ATo. When I saw it I decided - before anyone bet - to go all in . Chip leader UTG minimum raised and I couldn't get it out of my head to reraise. I did, was called and was out in 6th. I know better but I had made my decision and went ahead. Dumb play.

I make them also, but have been really keeping them to a min lately. My biggest "dumb play" mistake is to raise the flop in a raised pot trying to represent a set. People just wont fold an overpair, which of course is why sets are so profitable.

I almost never try big bluffs anymore. They just dont work unless youre playing a top player which theres not very many of.

MG I think we all make dumb plays. Yesterday I called a big raise heads up with AA. I was pretty sure my opponant had KK or QQ. I flop a set of Aces which I knew probably hurt my hand instead of helped it, my opponant bet into me. So yeah instead of smooth calling and seeing if I could get more money out of him I raised. What a stupid play, I was pretty sure he had KK or QQ and there is no way he can call a raise. He bet $60 and he had another $100 behind him and I had him covered. I don't think I would have gotten all his money but he definatly would have gotten a little more of it. My stupid play cost me $20-$100 and the best part is to this moment I dont know why I did it, I had position and two more streets to induce action.

LOL I always make dumb plays. Any poker player who tells you they don't either doesn't know what he is doing or is lying (which we all know poker players don't ever lie). The key is in what iceman said. You have to analize what happened in the hand and recognize the bad play so you don't do it again. Keep the dumb plays to a minimum. When I first started to become a winning poker player, I realized that the days I didn't make money were the days I was making bad calls or trying to bluff weak players out of pots. As soon as I stopped doing this and playing tight, I started making money. Hope this helps. Have a nice day :D

This is all true unless you can find a hot woman who also is good poker player. But alas poker rooms are like my major, no hot chicks.
