Did I play this correctly?

Postby emmasdad » Tue Jan 10, 2006 10:48 pm

Sorry if I posted this twice - I tried before but it didn't seem to post.

Did I play this hand correctly? I do not play very much no-limit holdem, but have been keeping up with these forums. I was ITM, slightly less than average stack, recently moved to the table and so had no read on any players, and had roughly 11 times the big blind. There were 10 tables left, and I was looking to move up. Should I have called (or folded?!) pre-flop instead of pushing in?

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t1500 (10 handed)

saw flop|saw showdown

MP2 (t27474)
Hero (t16246)
CO (t17934)
Button (t5310)
SB (t42776)
BB (t47485)
UTG (t28718)
UTG+1 (t17690)
UTG+2 (t31868)
MP1 (t40938)

Preflop: Hero is MP3 with [Kc], [Ac].
3 folds, MP1 calls t1500, MP2 raises to t4000, 5 folds, MP2 calls t12246.

Flop: (t19996) [3h], [9d], [As] (2 players)

Turn: (t19996) [Ts] (2 players)

River: (t19996) [Qd] (2 players)

Final Pot: t19996

Results in white below:
MP2 has Qc Qs (three of a kind, queens).
Hero has Kc Ac (one pair, aces).
Outcome: MP2 wins t19996.

The converter did not work correctly. I pushed all-in with T16,246. Villian had me covered.

The play is fine.

If MP1 had not limped, there could be an argument for smooth calling and re-evaluating on the flop, but you don't want to play AK in a multiway pot. That and the fact that if you do smooth call and MP1 comes along for the ride, you are going to have 12k left with a 12k pot and be pot committed anyway.

I cant possibly see folding here, unless there are a bunch of super small stacks and you are trying to move up ITM (which shouldent be your goal, go for the win).

Besides, if you dont want to play AKs here, what exactly are you waiting for?

You played it fine. It is hard to telll what happen pre flop. If you had called then pushed after the flop you would have won it right there. But if the AK hadn't hit then he would have pushed and you would have had give it up. So nothing wrong with all in pre-flop.

You may force me into my Yoda act.

Seriously, as long as you aren't making a mistake, then you have to take it as part of "one long poker game." I've been known to point out an opponent's mistake here and there. This is esp true when it's something like a suckout on the river when they shouldn't have been in the hand, hitting runner runner when they're 96% to lose, or calling a raise and a call with J3s and flopping the flush over my set. We laugh derisively about "I had a feeling" or "but they were soooted." Comedy is something that happens to the other guy.

In this case, you did the right thing, as did your opponent. Someone has to come in second.

Thanks for the kind words...I think. :)
