Just for variation I started up a FLO8 SnG table the other day. I have recently switched back to SnG's from cash games and felt like trying something new.
My Poker experience is 95% No Limit and Pot Limit Holdem. The other 5% is made up of FL Holdem, PLO8 and PLO, in that order. Needless to say, I am not anywhere near proficient in PLO8 so I guess I should be even worse in both a FL and SnG format.
Still a few events led me to believe I had stumbled on a +EV situation. First hand I am in the BB and I get... 9 limpers. That's right. Everyone limped. I know that people* think you can play a lot of hands in PLO, even more in PLO8 but this is silly. Some people play literally every hand. The BB *never* folds to a raise until the nlinds make up at least 20% of his or her stack etc etc.
Here's an example hand that I like. I have A36J on the button. A bunch of limpers. I decide to make a (marginal?) raise, everyone calls. By the river the board reads KJ286. 4 people have checked to me on every street then called my bet. On the river I bet my nut low for value thinking that if I am lucky I get half the pot, if I am unlucky I get a quarter. I bet and all the 4 players call. Here's the XXXX-ing ridiculous thing. It all slides my way. I scoop. 4 people called me on the river, none of them had the nut low and none of them could beat middle two-pair for high.
Anyway... I think I am making a lot of mistakes in marginal situations and I lack a grasp of the sliding scales of hand values as the blinds go up and player number goes down. My only previous experience with this game is from PL at full tables so obviously there is a huge difference in post flop play as well. What I have working for me is decent hand reading skills and a high amount of aggression, but even though I feel I already have an edge there is a huge amount of things I need to improve so any tips would be extremely welcome.
