good draw reraised on the flop

Postby euri10 » Fri Feb 11, 2005 4:45 pm

I post this hand as I am not sure I played it the right way.
I make a pot preflop raise as I think it is a good hand.
table is pretty loose, we are 4 to see the flop...

I pot the flop because I have a good draw, but I don't want the clubs having cheap cards to beat me, even if I have the dry King.
Suddenly I face a re-raise from a guy who I know is not a bluffer, who is quite respectable and whose stack is twice the max buy-in but half mine atm...
iwhat does it mean ? what is your play here ?

PokerStars Pot-Limit Omaha High, $0.25 BB (7 handed)

BB ($9.95)
UTG ($46.80)
MP1 ($10.70)
Hero ($79.40)
CO ($14.80)
Button ($24.40)
SB ($57.30)

Preflop: Hero is MP2 with [Jd], [Ad], [Kc], [Td].
UTG calls $0.25, 1 fold, Hero raises to $1.1, 2 folds, SB calls $1, BB calls $0.85, UTG calls $0.85.

Flop: ($4.40) [9c], [Ac], [Qs] (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG checks, Hero bets $4.2, SB folds, BB folds, UTG raises to $8.4,

Sounds like a set with a flush draw to me. He only min raised it so with your wrap straight draw, I think you are in good position to take a card off the top. He's giving you great odds to chase. If the turn pairs the board or puts the flush there, I would check/fold. If it doesn't and it doesn't complete your hand, I would count my outs (2 T's, 2 J's, 3 K's and 3 8's - not counting clubs of course) to determine if you call a bet from him on the turn because I don't think you are winning unless you make that nut straight.

well good to hear your thought, but I didn't played it this way at all.
I had a note on this player telling : doesn't bet K-flush on the river...
so I re-raised him for the amount of the pot because I told myself : if he has a flush draw and nothing else he will fold, if he has a set lower than A he may fold it because of my raise preflop, thinking I have trip Aces, in fact I thought than a raise was better than a cold call...

then he called all-in.
Turn was [8h] giving me the str8
River was a [3c]
he had a set of 9 with this hand [6c] [9d] [3s] [9h] I won with the str8

what's quite interesting is the 2dimes result of our hands !
with his trips 9's he's only a small favorite :

Kc Ad Jd Td 377 45.98 443 54.02 0 0.00 0.460

but if I change his holdings from 3s to a 3c giving him trips + flush draw it's amazing :

Lol some people do make some strange bets :) I wouldn't have had him on that, but then again he did give you ample odds to continue. I think once he makes this raise he's unlikely to release his hand though (it's either a monster or a big draw, or, errmm, bottom set lol) so in most situations where that occurs you'd be better off just calling along.

This does bring up one important point though - it's very important to run lots of hand simulations to get a good feel for the game. Having run some stuff through two dimes you now have a better knowledge of the odds involved in some possible situations on that board, which will, in future, make you money. Keep it up, thinking about the game and learning about the underlying odds and mathematics will make you get better and better!

Was nice to play with you today btw, albeit for only 8 hands or so!

well I was half right. You likely could have gotten him all in on the turn anyway. Good job. Keep these hands coming. these are really good hands and good for analysis.
